Big Animals!

I can’t F’ing believe how big that pig is.  seriously.  [picture of said “big f’ing pig” is down towards the bottom of the post]

33 foot shark:

SharkA five-tonne shark, 10 meters (32.8 feet) in length and 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) in width, is seen after being caught by fishermen on the outskirts of Lianyungang, east China’s Jiangsu province, May 23, 2007. Boy Kills HUGE Wild Hog:

HogHogzilla is being made into a horror movie. But the sequel may be even bigger: Meet Monster Pig. An 11-year-old Alabama boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds (476.72 kg) and measured 9-feet-4 (2.84 meter) from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail. Think hams as big as car tires.

If the claims are accurate, Jamison Stone’s trophy boar would be bigger than Hogzilla, the famed wild hog that grew to seemingly mythical proportions after being killed in south Georgia in 2004.

Hogzilla originally was thought to weigh 1,000 pounds (453.6 kg) and measure 12 feet (3.65 meter) in length. National Geographic experts who unearthed its remains believe the animal actually weighed about 800 pounds (362.87 kg) and was 8 feet (2.4 meter) long.

Regardless of the comparison, Jamison is reveling in the attention over his pig, which has a Web site put up by his father — — that is generating Internet buzz.

  1. I think Hogzilla II is an optical illusion. You can virtually see the lice crawling on the carcus … but can’t come close to making-out the logo on the little charlatan’s hat? Really, is it just me or does he not appear to be crouching 10-15 feet in the background?

  2. Good observation. Although Snopes and even (*cough) Fox News is giving some credibility to it, but I think you’re right about the camera shot- anything closer to the camera is going to look a lot bigger.

  3. Thanks for the link to Snopes. I particularly enjoyed this part regarding Hogzilla I:

“Indeed, when the National Geographic Society sent a team of scientists to exhume Hogzilla, what they found was not a 12-foot behemoth of a hog, but an animal they estimated had measured about 7-1/2 feet in length and weighed around 800 lbs. — a hybrid of wild boar and domestic Hampshire pig that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution described as ‘large, perhaps even record-setting large, but not hide-the-children-and-get-your-guns large.'”

Going by just the evidence presented in the photo of Hogzilla II, I’m very skeptical — though I’ll admit to being bigoted toward the credibility of your average red-neck. 😛

  4. I think you’re “spot on” about the perceptiion deal with those pictures- I should have been more observant- please return my skeptical badge as i will prove to be more worthy in the future! lol. actually i saw that skepchic wrote about the piece as well and she talked about the ridiculous way the views were done.
